“We gotta get out of here,” Billy hissed, tugging at my arm with his entire body. But I was frozen, locked in place. I’d never seen someone get slimebied, and maybe it was weird, but I was fascinated.

Slimebie Professor Quandary smiled at us, swaying slightly just like the mayor, but I thought I maybe saw an extra sparkle in his eye. Was that the slime taking over? Or was Professor Quandary fighting back?

“Sam, come on!”

I finally gave in, backing away with Billy until, with the slimebies watching, we took off running the way we came. We didn’t stop until we’d reached our own neighborhood.

“Okay, this is really bad,” Billy said as we slowed to a walk. “The slime has spread way more than we thought. First the mayor, then Professor Quandary—and did you see that news crew go inside and never come back out? The Conference Center must be full of slimebies by now.”

“Hey, easy,” I said. For some reason I was feeling sort of giddy. “Didn’t Professor Quandary say something about the slime only being able to control up to sixty people at once? At least we know it can’t get much worse.” I tilted my head to one side. “I wonder why it can only take over sixty people. It must have to do with how much slime has to stay in each brain in order to slimebify someone.”

“I guess,” Billy said.

“We should do the math! This could be useful scientific data! Okay, so the batch we made filled a five hundred milliliter beaker. Take that and divide it by sixty brains, and that means each brain has a bit over eight milliliters of slime floating around in it, on average.”

“Sam …”

“But wait, not at the beginning! Your mom must have had all the slime in her brain, and then most of it squelched over to your dad. It must leave just enough behind to control the person plus some extra to make more slimebies. And the rest moves on.”

“Sam …”

“Isn’t it interesting that earwax doesn’t seem to change the slime’s chemical composition? It must get covered in it chugging in and out of people’s ears all day. Ooh, maybe once the slime’s activated it becomes chemically stable. Hey, what is earwax anyway?”

“SAM!”

I looked over at Billy walking beside me. His face was pink again.

“Can we maybe not talk about my parents having slime for brains right now?” he said.

I held up my hands. “Right. Sorry. I got carried away. We should be planning how we’re going to get past the slimebies so we can steal the lab book back from your bathroom and make the antidote.”

“Yes!” Billy nodded as we turned the corner onto the next street. “And that’s not gonna be easy. How are we even—Quick! Get down!”

I didn’t need telling twice. I’d seen them, too.

What looked like the entire horde of slimebies was coming down the road, directly toward us.

Billy and I dove behind a big plastic garbage can, peering around the sides to see.
